Position summary
Ruth Murdoch Elementary School and Andrews Academy are seeking a Music Instructor who will serve as a spiritual and musical leader across both campuses. This individual will teach instrumental band and handbells, while fostering student growth in musical excellence, worship, and service. The instructor will lead performances, tours, and music ministry opportunities, supporting the schools’ mission to develop students spiritually, academically, and socially through Christ-centered education.
Qualifications summary
Have a Bachelor’s/Masters degree in elementary and/or secondary music education, with a minimum of three years of related teaching experience.
Hold North American Division and/or state certification to teach music or eligibility to qualify for both.
Demonstrate leadership in various adjunct duties such as serving/leading on staff and board committees, chapel & church.
Must be a member of the Seventh-day Adventist church who is committed to Christ and loves working with children.
Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.
Duties and responsibilities
Instructional Responsibilities
- Teach assigned music courses across RMES and AA, including band and handbells.
- Plan and deliver engaging instruction that develops musical skill, theory, and performance ability.
- Assess student progress and maintain accurate academic records.
- Integrate faith and learning through music instruction and performance.
Music Program Leadership
- Develop and implement an annual music program calendar in collaboration with the music department and administration.
- Organize and lead school concerts, church performances, tours, and community engagements.
- Promote and support student-led music ministry opportunities.
- Maintain and manage music equipment, instruments, and facilities responsibly.
Student Engagement & Supervision
- Foster a positive, structured, and inclusive environment for all students.
- Encourage student leadership, teamwork, and personal growth through music.
- Supervise students during classes, rehearsals, performances, and tours.
Communication & Collaboration
- Maintain effective communication with principals, faculty, staff, parents, and students.
- Collaborate with administration and colleagues to support school mission and initiatives.
- Participate in faculty meetings, school events, chapel programs, and assemblies.
Additional Responsibilities
- Support school marketing and recruitment through music programs and performances.
- Serve on committees and contribute to school-wide initiatives as assigned.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by RMES and AA principals.
Supervisory responsibilities
- Always provide supervision for students in your care--during in class and off campus activities..
Qualifications
- To perform this job successfully, candidates must have the minimum qualification of a Bachelor’s degree in elementary and/or secondary music education, current NAD denominational and MI State certification or be eligible to obtain both.
- Master's Degree preferred.
Must be a Seventh-day Adventist in good and regular standing.
Technical competencies
- The teacher must be able to play at a reasonable level of competency, all band instruments and equipment common to the teaching profession, such as a computer, copy machine, smart TV, overhead projector, scanner, digital/video camera, etc.
- Be able to maintain instruments and manage all equipment and facilities in a responsible manner.
- Follow copyright laws in the use of music.

- Be able to work collaboratively in a diverse university school environment.
- Work harmoniously with staff members, the board, constituents, the administration, colleagues at RMES, AA, Andrews University, and MI office of Education.

Physical demands
The job requires a full range of body motion including standing, sitting, balancing, repetitive hand motion, walking, stooping, bending, lifting, and reaching (cupboards, cabinets, bulletin and white boards) and repetitive hand motion. The job also requires good hearing and vision adequate for assigned responsibilities.
Work environment
The employee is subject to working in a generally well-lighted and ventilated classroom environment approximately 90-100% of the time. Works in high noise environment.
